About michael niebuhr

strive for a better community.

As a BOI, native to Galveston, I've had the privilege of experiencing the unique joys this island offers. I am grateful that my parents chose to live here, providing me with the opportunity to grow up on the island, including over 25 years right here in District 5—first as a youth and now with my wife, having raised our children here. Following my graduation from Ball High, I ventured to Texas A&M University, gaining a fresh perspective on the island's abundant offerings during my time away.

Upon my return, I dedicated nearly a decade to the service industry, recognizing the significance of those contributing to one of the island’s top economic sectors. Later, pursuing a degree in Environmental Law & Policy at Texas A&M at Galveston, I embarked on my current career in coastal conservation and natural resource management. Throughout my professional journey, I've served in local environmental non-profits and the state public sector, always driven by a commitment to community service, not personal gain.

This commitment led me to join the Board of Directors for Vision Galveston, leveraging my Galveston residency history and expertise in green infrastructure related to our island's natural resources and city planning. Serving on the inaugural Board of Directors for La Izqueirda Surf & Music Fest has enabled me to promote the island's unique cultural heritage and support community-driven arts. My service to this community is extended through volunteerism with Surfrider Galveston, Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, and Galveston’s Own Farmers Market.

Motivated by my deep passion for Galveston, I feel a duty to further serve my community by running for City Council. I hope to garner the support of District 5 residents and the entire island as we collectively strive for a better community.

Together, we can create a Better Galveston for Galveston.
